A few minutes’ drive up Tunnel Mountain Road brings you to the peaceful Buffalo Mountain Lodge. The lodge is made up of a main building with lounge, restaurant and fitness facilities and a series of two-storey wooden annexes around the property.
The style is very much in keeping with the natural scenery; each room has a stone fireplace and fresh firewood is replaced daily by porters who are on call to start the fire if needed.
Many walking trails are nearby and elk are often spotted roaming around in the mornings. Alternatively, take the shuttle into town to explore Banff itself.
A delightful lodge, reminiscent of the mountains, located just a few minutes' drive from downtown Banff. Please note, the rooms are rather dark and some can be a little noisy, especially at weekends when the hotel is a popular venue for weddings. Although service standards are mixed, the food in the restaurant is excellent, if slightly pricey, and advance reservations are recommended.

Rooms
There are four room types, all of which include a wood burning stone fireplace with firewood, seating area and TV with Blu-ray player. Rooms gradually increase in size and amenities, from regular guest rooms and rooms with a kitchenette through to the Premier room with its vaulted pine ceilings and over-sized bathroom.
Location
Located slightly out of town, this lodge feels more like a peaceful retreat. Primarily surrounded by woodlands, there’s a small shop and laundromat across the road. Banff town centre is an easy five-minute drive away, though you can take the complimentary shuttle.
Food and drink
There are three dining options at the lodge. Sleeping Buffalo Dining Room in the main building is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu is varied with a focus on locally sourced, high quality ingredients. The Sleeping Buffalo Lounge is a more casual option with a smaller menu. The hours are extended from that of the Dining Room. Both are available for room service. Finally, Cilantro is a delightful summer restaurant with a lovely patio.
Facilities and activities
In the warmer months activities include hiking, biking, canoeing, horseback riding, white-water rafting and the local gondola. During winter, activities include skiing, snowboarding, skating, dog sledding, snowshoeing and sleigh rides. Many of these can be arranged from the lodge. The lodge itself offers a small fitness facility on site, dry sauna and large outdoor hot tub.
