Crossbasket Castle

Crossbasket Castle

Glasgow, The UK

This 17th-century castle, once a religious retreat, is an impressive property from first sight: its gray, stone walls and traditional parapet roof loom above the surrounding woodland with warming light from within providing a glow from the many tall windows.

Inside, the wooden floors, high ceilings and sweeping staircase in the entrance hall give way to an intimate library lined with wood panels and display cabinets holding antique, leather-bound books. The wood-furnished bar leads off from here, while The Stewart Room opposite serves afternoon tea in a handsome space with light, comfortable decor. The Baillie Room serves a set lunch menu and either an à la carte or a tasting menu for dinner.

Each of the nine rooms is individually styled and named after one of the previous owners. Classically elegant with antique furniture, heavy fabrics and period-style wallpaper, they blend the grand proportions and rich styling of the past with modern technology and thoughtful touches.

The castle is located about 20 to 30 minutes’ drive southeast of central Glasgow, and a half hour’s drive from Glasgow airport.

OUR OPINION:

This impressive property has been authentically furnished throughout and we think it provides excellent service in a historic setting along with comfortable, beautiful rooms.

Rooms

Each of the nine en suite rooms is spacious and elegantly furnished in a style in keeping with the castle’s historic background. Antique furniture, heavy fabrics and crystal chandeliers complement the high ceilings and large windows offering views over the gardens and river. Two of the rooms can have twin beds, while all the others can fit an extra bed. The two smallest rooms and one of the suites just have a shower in the bathroom, while all the others have a much larger bathroom, with a separate bath and shower. The largest room is a two-bedroom suite situated in a turret, and is accessed by a spiral stone staircase.

Location

The castle is located 30 minutes’ drive southeast of Glasgow on the outskirts of East Kilbride. It is just half an hour’s drive from the airport. Set in leafy grounds on the banks of the Rotten Calder River, there are several short walking trails to explore in the area or along the river banks.

Food and drink

The prestigious Albert & Michel Roux Jr Restaurant is set in an intimate room decorated with gold leaf wallpaper and antique furniture. It offers an à la carte menu revolving around local produce such as Highland venison, Orkney beef and Scottish blue-tail lobster, as well as a seven-course set menu. The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday. The more casual lounge menu is available seven days a week.
