Jura island tour

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Craighouse on the morning of the tour, when you’ll join a small group for this full-day trip around Jura. The first part of the day focuses on the island’s history and way of life. Your guide will explain all about the founding of Craighouse as it is today, before taking you into the village church where there’s an excellent exhibition of retouched photographs documenting the island and its inhabitants in the early 20th century.

You then set off up the east coast of Jura, finding out about the island’s history, community, wildlife and culture as you go. You’ll hear about the old crofting way of life and see ancient croft houses, as well as learning about more recent developments on the island.

Out beyond Craighouse, you’ll visit a number of ruined buildings, stop at various scenic viewpoints and meet some of the islanders and hear their stories. As you travel, keep an eye out for otters as you drive along next to the water. Then, later on, watch out for minke whales and basking sharks in the stretch of water separating Jura from the mainland.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable day and your guide is very flexible — if you have ancestors from the island, or a particular interest in wildlife, he’ll make sure to incorporate this during the tour.
