Black Rock Lodge is a delightful property in a peaceful jungle setting, comprised of individual cabins with porches and hammocks that enable you to relax as you admire the magnificent views over the Macal River. The cabins are dotted around the lush grounds, connected by a series of pathways, and the main restaurant building has a wonderful viewpoint out over the river.
The lodge allows you to make your time in the Cayo District as busy or as relaxed as you'd like — excursions can be arranged to some of the region’s most iconic sights, such as the Caracol Ruins or the ATM Caves, but if you'd prefer less exertion a variety of activities can be enjoyed in the lodge’s immediate surrounds, such as birdwatching, night walks, gentle river tubing and horse riding.
One of our favourite lodges in Belize, with a beautiful natural setting, great birdlife and a wide range of activities.

Rooms
Black Rock offers seven cabin categories, all simply decorated with local artwork and high ceilings, but constructed to take advantage of the mountain breezes, which naturally cool the rooms through large screened windows. All feature private bathrooms with hot showers, and their own terrace where you can relax in a hammock and take in the sights and sounds of the forest.
Classic View Cabins have a queen size bed and a double bed, with views out to the canyon cliffs, while River View Cabins are identical other than being closer to the river, and the River View King Cabin offers a private retreat for couples with its king size bed. River View Deluxe Cabins are slightly larger with two queen size beds and a sitting area along with panoramic views of the river, while River Front Deluxe Cabins have wonderful views of the canyon cliffs and Black Rock Falls. There's also a River Front Deluxe Cabin with a king size bed and walk-in shower that looks out to the canyon cliffs. Finally, the luxurious River Front Suites have wraparound patios and rooftop decks, a king size bed, a living room that can accommodate two further guests and cliff views from the walk-in shower.
Location
The Cayo District is one of the best places in Belize to explore caves, ruins and try a variety adventure activities. All lodges here can be accessed by road from Belize City or from the border with Guatemala, which works well if you're combining both countries. Black Rock enjoys a more secluded jungle location than others in the region, the last section of the journey being on a rather bumpy track, but this brings its own advantages when it comes to the amazing array of birds in the surrounding area and the wonderful views over the Macal River.
Food and drink
An à la carte breakfast is served in the lodge’s main restaurant, which is a great spot to look out for birds in the mornings. Lunch can also be taken at the restaurant if you're not out on excursions, and dinner is a four course set meal served 'family style', where everyone eats together and the menu changes daily. The remote location of the lodge means you're unlikely to take meals anywhere else, but the cuisine is hearty and imaginative, with plenty of fresh ingredients produced on site, and dining is always an informal, sociable affair. The on site bar serves fresh juices, beers, wine, spirits and cocktails.
Families
Many of the lodge's cabins can accommodate families, with the River Front Suites being particularly spacious.
Facilities and activities
There's a small swimming pool at the lodge, perfect for cooling down in the jungle heat, as well as a wealth of activities to be enjoyed in the immediate surrounds. Black Rock has six miles (9.6 kilometres) of forest trails which you can explore at your leisure or pay locally to be accompanied by an expert guide — the night walks in the jungle are particularly recommended! Guided birdwatching can also be arranged, as can canoeing, river tubing and horse riding on trails of various different lengths. There are also yoga mats available, which can be taken to a scenic platform for your own practise.
Accessibility
Please note that the River Front Suites are not suitable for guests with limited mobility as they can only be accessed by stairs.
