Designed in the style of ethnic longhouses, Mulu Marriott Resort is built on wooden stilts, three metres above the ground. Linked by a series of wooden walkways, the resort stands on the banks of the Melinau River, in the midst of a breathtaking natural splendour.
The accommodation is of a good standard considering the isolated location but still relatively simple. There are 188 rooms consisting of either Deluxe, Executive Suite, Crown Suite or Royal Suite, all of which have rich hardwood flooring, minibar fridge, individually controlled air-conditioning, standard amenities, hot and cold showers. The resort has its own water treatment plant, which supplies all guest rooms with clean and safe water. Every room has a veranda or balcony, which offers guests a view of either the rich surrounding jungle or the Melinau River.
The spa is a welcome addition as is the small pool which is great to cool off in after a day's walking through the jungle. The restaurant serves a mix of local and Western food and on most nights there is some kind of activity put on by the staff that showcases the local culture. Although it's fair to say this can feel quite staged it is done with the best intentions.
