Opus XVI

Bergen, Norway

Set in what was once Bergen’s largest bank, the Opus XVI combines historic charm and modern sophistication with a convenient location in the heart of the city. The common spaces reflect the 19th-century grandeur of the original building, with marble floors and columns, gold and crystal chandeliers and a grand piano.

The 65 rooms and suites match the sleek sophistication of the rest of the hotel — each is individually designed but they all share the same tailored, elegant style. The hotel is owned and operated by descendants of Norwegian pianist and composer, Edvard Grieg, and you’ll find a small museum exploring his life and legacy on site. There’s also a well-equipped fitness room, a formal restaurant and a grab-and-go café.

OUR OPINION:

We like Opus XVI for its effortless luxury and historic elegance, as well as its central location. It’s a short walk to the major attractions, but on a quiet pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly street.

Rooms

Each of the 65 rooms and suites is unique, a legacy of the building’s historic nature. However, they all share a tailored elegance, with upholstered headboards, long curtains and a classic palette of gentle gold, soft sand and warm gray, as well as rich maroon accents. The contemporary style is gentle rather than starkly minimalist, with luxe touches like velvet couches in the suites’ sitting areas. Each room is equipped with modern technology such as personal tablets and in-room climate control, to enhance your stay.

You can choose from five different room types, ranging from a comfortable Classic room, which has views over Vågsallmenningen Plaza or Mount Fløyen, to the generous suites, which have separate sitting or dining areas, and are named after people and moments from Edvard Grieg’s life.

Location

Just a few streets from the waterfront, the hotel is located on Vågsallmenningen Plaza, a quiet, pedestrian-friendly street. It’s surrounded by boutiques and banks, giving it a restful atmosphere. However, you’re still just a two-minute stroll from the main square, with all its shops and cafés, and a three-minute walk to the popular Fish Market.

Food and drink

  • Buffet and à la carte breakfast options.
  • The Opus 16 restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner in a grand space that has preserved the building’s original architecture.
  • Separate wine bar in lobby.
