Lake Toba is one of Sumatra’s most spectacular sights. It was formed some 100,000 years ago after an enormous volcanic eruption so great that it created the largest lake in Southeast Asia.
Pulau Samosir Island
In the middle of this lake, which is almost the size of Singapore, is Pulau Samosir, an island created by a smaller eruption between 30,000 and 75,000 years ago. At an elevation of 800 metres the climate is comfortable and the setting is truly superb, making it a popular getaway in a perfect setting for those looking simply to relax.
Perhaps the best way to enjoy the stunning scenery around Parapat and Lake Toba is to take a cruise on the lake around the island of Samosir.
