City Lights Boutique Lodge

Rotorua, New Zealand

This boutique B&B offers comfortable lodgings set in large grounds on the slopes of Mount Ngongotaha, just outside Rotorua. The smaller size of this property offers an intimate experience with genial hosts who can provide expert advice about the area.

There’s a large guest lounge with an open fireplace, soft leather sofas, and bold, contemporary art, and two of the rooms offer direct access to the outdoor terrace. Along with the B&B rooms, the property also offers a two-bedroom apartment and a two-bedroom cottage, both of which have self-catering kitchens. All are decorated in a comfortable, contemporary manner with modern en suite bathrooms and large windows.

In the morning, the healthy buffet breakfast includes local fruit and juices, homemade muesli and preserves, yoghurts and breads. There’s complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property, a small gym and an infrared sauna. Outside, there’s a heated spa pool in the garden and plenty of space in the seating area which is kitted out with sun loungers.

OUR OPINION:

This is a great option in Rotorua with fantastic views of the geothermal activity of the plateau below. The hosts are very warm and welcoming and serve up a hearty breakfast with lots of choice. The resident alpacas are a lovely addition to an already friendly atmosphere.

The lodge has just three guest rooms each individually decorated in a homely but contemporary style. Two of the rooms have direct access to the garden terrace and each has an en suite bathroom with bathrobes. The property also has a two-bedroom self-catering apartment and a two-bedroom cottage. Along with complimentary Wi-Fi, all rooms have flat-screen TV, tea and coffee facilities, and large windows, some offering sweeping views over Rotorua.

Location

The lodge offers the best of both worlds with a rural location and a large garden removed from Rotorua’s sulphurous, geothermal smells yet it is only an eight-minute drive from the heart of the city and its shops, restaurants and bubbling mud pools. Many of the area’s attractions such as the Skyline Gondola, Mitai Māori Village and Te Puia are close by.

Food and drink

A healthy buffet breakfast is served in the lounge each morning and includes a range of fresh fruit and juice, homemade muesli and preserves, breads, pastries and cereals. Although the B&B does not serve any other meals, it is only a short journey into town where there is a wide range of cafés and restaurants, and the hosts are happy to make recommendations based on your preferences.

The property has a small gym, infrared sauna, outdoor spa pool and a large garden with panoramic views.
