The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands formed the heart of the British colony of Natal, as it was here that the squires and gentlemen of colonial society saw the greatest resemblance to home. They carved out country estates and stud farms for polo horses, turning the region into a microcosm of Britain.
Today the lush landscape remains, as do some of the larger estates and studs. What has sprung up in recent times are craft shops selling beautifully worked goods, from candles, to wood carvings and shoes. There are also breweries and cheese makers to visit as you wend your way through the scenery, enjoying lunch at a restaurant or pub.
