Sixty million years ago, the Big Horn Mountains were created, ultimately reaching elevations over 13,000 feet. Today, virtually every era in geology can be viewed in exposed rock strata as you travel from the foothills to the high alpine peaks. One of the most impressive lookouts is Cloud Peak which beckons visitors to enjoy its panoramic views.
Nestled beneath the Big Horns, the old West meets the modern era in Sheridan, a town that offers modern amenities as well as friendly hospitality and charm. The town's main street is lined with historic buildings, including the Sheridan Inn, where Buffalo Bill Cody auditioned acts for his famous Wild West show. More than 30 downtown buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places and delightfully coexist with more modern shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants, making it a delightful place to explore.
To get a real taste of the old West, take the Bozeman Trail tour or the Little Big Horn tour. The Bozeman Trail was the road on which Fort Kearney, Fort Reno and Fort F.C. Smith were established to protect travellers moving west. About 90 miles north of Sheridan, the Little Bighorn Battlefield was the site of Custer’s last stand, which effectively ended the Indian Wars in America in 1876. Nearby the Rosebud Battlefield was the location of another Native American victory in 1876.
