Jackie

Tanzania Specialist

My first trip to Africa was over forty years ago, when I was lucky enough to explore South Africa and had my first lion encounter. Africa has drawn me back ever since.

I always knew that I wanted to live an extraordinary life, and have been lucky enough to live and work in seven different countries all over the world, including, Zimbabwe, Russia and Australia. Whilst living in Zimbabwe, I travelled extensively across Southern and Eastern Africa, and experienced the varied landscapes and wildlife that each country has to offer.

Tanzania adds an extra dimension to the African experience — from its vast landscapes, the annual wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, to Zanzibar and surrounding islands — the country is so rich in culture as well as having some of the best beaches in the world.

Q&A with Jackie

Leopard

What's the one thing you always pack?

Never go on safari without your binoculars. There's nothing like the naked eye when seeking out the wildlife, but to see a leopard up a tree in the far distance and not have the means to zoom in on it, would be such a missed opportunity. Make sure they are small, light and powerful.

Jackie horse riding in the Indian Ocean

What's your most vivid travel moment?

My most vivid travel moment has to be when I was given the chance to go horse riding in the Indian Ocean in Mozambique. The horses had been rescued many years before and I had read a book about their journey. So, to meet and ride them was a very emotional experience. To be almost immersed in the ocean and putting your trust in the horses, it was something I shall never forget.

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River

Your best piece of travel advice?

When on safari, take as many opportunities as you can do go on game drives and boat trips, and step out of your comfort zone with a walking safari. All the excursions are undertaken with professional guides and you will be in safe hands. If you don’t, you could miss some of the most memorable moments in a lifetime.
