Itinerary idea in detail

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

  • Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Kota Kinabalu.

  • Arrive in Kota Kinabalu, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel, with the rest of the day at leisure. This evening, you might like to visit the night market, which will give you the chance to try a huge array of Malay dishes.

  • This morning you will leave your hotel for your flight to Sandakan. Transfer to your lodge on arrival, and spend the afternoon enjoying the sounds and scenery of the rainforest around you.

  • You will be taken to Sepilok this morning to see the 10am orangutan feeding. After this, you will head into the jungle and journey up the Kinabatangan River and onto your riverside lodge. Once you are checked in, head out onto the river looking for the wildlife so prevalent in the area — you may see proboscis monkey, orangutan and pygmy elephants!

  • Rise early for a second trip on the river and the chance to visit the nearby oxbow lake. Breakfast is served back at the lodge. You have free time back at the lodge to catch up on some sleep, or, for the more energetic, take the jungle boardwalk trails around the lodge. Lunch will be served at the lodge. In the late afternoon, you will head out on the water, with the chance to spot any wildlife you have not yet seen.

  • Today leave Abai Jungle Lodge, heading further upriver to the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. Enjoy a final trip on the river this afternoon and try to tick some more animals off your list, and enjoy dinner at your lodge.

  • This morning, you will leave the river and head on to Lahad Datu, a small town in the interior of Sabah. You will then continue into the Danum Valley. It is worth struggling through the bumpy journey to Danum Valley so cling on to the door handle, watch your head on the vehicle roof and look forward to arriving at your lodge in the middle of the rainforest! Once you arrive you will have a delicious lunch and then meet your guide who will discuss the plan for your time here. This afternoon you will visit the canopy walkway and learn about the flora and fauna in the area on one of the many nature trails. This evening you can head out on a night drive where you may be lucky enough to spot some of the area's nocturnal animals.

  • Why not rise early to see and hear the rainforest come alive. After breakfast, you will head back into the rainforest for the trek to Coffin Cliff, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the lodge and Danum Valley. Stop off at a waterfall on your way back to cool off! This afternoon you can spend more time on the trails trying to track wildlife, or you may have the option to go tubing down the Danum River — a brilliant way to experience the area. A night walk this evening will give you a new experience of the area around the lodge.

  • Enjoy a final morning in Danum, with an early lunch before your return transfer to Lahad Datu. From here you will fly back to Kota Kinabalu, where you will be met and transferred to the jetty for your boat to Bungaraya. Enjoy four nights of luxury on this lovely island.

  • Spend the day relaxing on the topical island. Gaya Island is in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, giving you the opportunity to see some flourishing coral gardens and vibrant marine life.

  • Another day to enjoy Gaya Island. Your hotel runs daily excursions into the surrounding jungle, studying plant and animal life.

  • Enjoy your final full day in Borneo. You might like to make the most of the hotel's extensive spa facilities or try some early morning yoga.

  • A final day at Bunga Raya before you head back to the mainland for your flight home.

  • Arrive home today to complete your journey.
