The Ghan follows the trail blazed by the early explorers and Afghan ‘cameleers’ who tirelessly supplied the Overland Telegraph stations ensuring that the remote Outback and Red Centre kept in touch with the rest of the world.
On its longest-running route, The Ghan sets out on an 1,850 mile two-night journey through the heart of Australia, beginning (or ending, if you do the southbound trip) in Adelaide and proceeding to the Flinders Ranges before crossing the Simpson Desert and reaching Alice Springs in the Red Centre. The newest stretch of line heads across Australia’s arid heartland to Katherine, famous for its stunning gorges, before tracking through the lush tropical scenery of the Top End.
Cabin options are split into three guest types: Gold, Gold Premium, and Platinum, with a choice of single and twin cabins in Gold, twin cabins or suites in Gold Premium, and twin or double cabins in Platinum.
All twin sleepers offer comfortable three-seater lounges which convert into sleeping berths, private en suite bathroom with toilet, shower and wash basin (please note that facilities for single cabins are shared). The cabins are fully serviced by your own steward with fresh sheets and pillows. Cabins also feature power points, a full-length mirror, reading lamps and foldaway table.
Dining is in a beautifully decorated restaurant car, so you can enjoy fine food and wine whilst taking in the panoramic views across this vast and beautiful continent.
The service operates twice weekly from April to October and once a week in March and November. If you choose to board in Adelaide, you can easily reach the city by train from both Sydney and Melbourne.
