Hotel de la Cité Carcassonne-MGallery

Carcassonne, France

Tucked into the ramparts of medieval walls, Hotel de la Cité MGallery Carcassonne provides a boutique-style oasis in the heart of UNESCO-listed Carcassonne, the largest city in Europe with its ancient walls still intact.

Built in the early 1900s on the site of a former bishop’s palace, this neo-Gothic castle retains its elegant grandeur with stained-glass windows, sculpted wood panels, and a grand wooden staircase. Meanwhile, the oldest part of the hotel includes a stone stairway leading to rooms in a 12th-century tower.

Rooms and suites are individually designed, and all come with marble bathrooms, city, rampart, or garden views, and furnishings made by local artisans. Classic French styling blends elegant Art Deco design with creamy hues, sumptuous velvets, and medieval touches like ornamental tapestries.

Local ingredients feature prominently in the Michelin-starred restaurant, while pastries and breads are freshly made in the hotel’s boulangerie, the city’s only bakery. You can feast on seasonal dishes in the high-ceilinged dining room, or tuck into local cheeses straight from the trolley on the terrace with views of turrets and the Basilica.

You’ll find plenty of spaces here to relax — in the library bar with a craft cocktail, at the intimate spa, and beside the heated pool in the hotel gardens, surrounded by leafy landscaping and ancient walls.

OUR OPINION:

I love the peaceful yet central location of this neo-Gothic castle hotel, and its views over medieval turrets and the Basilica from the suites and Michelin-starred restaurant terrace. It’s compact enough not to overwhelm, but sufficiently stately to feel special.

Rooms

Hotel de la Cité offers a selection of rooms and suites spread across two buildings connected by a covered walkway. Each is individually decorated in a way that preserves the buildings’ character. Many come with stained-glass windows, sculpted walls, and corniced ceilings, and some have wrought-iron balconies. One suite is tucked away in a 12th-century tower accessed via a stone stairway, while another has a spacious terrace.

The decor throughout is classic French — floral motifs, brass lighting, floor-length curtains — and the rich fabrics and elegant furnishings are made by local artisans. All rooms come with marble bathrooms, and enjoy garden, city, or rampart views.
