Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, the COMO Castello del Nero offers an elegant and luxurious retreat in the Tuscan countryside. Originally a 12th-century estate with extensive ground, the hotel still produces its own award-winning wines and olive oils.
The rooms are situated within the original manor house, surrounding stables and outbuildings and boast exposed wood-beam ceilings and terracotta floors. Flat-screen televisions, free Wi-Fi and air conditioning are all standard.
A Michelin-starred executive chef oversees the menus at both the La Torre terrace restaurant and less formal La Taverna. The indulgent COMO Shambhala Retreat offers a range of therapeutic treatments. Additionally, there is a large outdoor swimming pool and plenty of options for hiking across the estate. Wine and olive oil tastings can also be arranged and there is a free shuttle on alternating days to both Florence and Siena, if you want to explore further afield.
We love the bucolic setting of COMO Castello del Nero. The attentive staff, excellent food and a host of activities make it an ideal base for exploring Tuscany.

Rooms
The rooms embody all of the vibrancy and charm of a Tuscan home, with airy patterned curtains, exposed-beam ceilings and terracotta floors. Each room has its own individual quirks as well, including some rooms that feature classic Italian frescoes. Amenities include flat-screen televisions, complimentary Wi-Fi and daily newspapers.
Location
The hotel is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, used to produce their own award-winning wine and olive oil. Situated between Florence and Siena, day trips to one of the cities are easy and quick via the hotel’s free shuttle. It is also about a 20-minute walk or five-minute drive into the village of Tavarnelle, where you’ll find a handful of shops and restaurants.
Food and drink
COMO Castello del Nero offers plenty of dining options for guests. The premiere choice is the La Torre restaurant on the terrace, presided over by a Michelin-starred chef and offering unparalleled views of the countryside alongside a rotating menu of seasonal signature dishes. There is also La Taverna, surrounded by the purple and gray stone walls of what was once the castle kitchen. In the summer, it offers alfresco dining in the gardens, providing a lovely view. The intimate hotel bar, with its vaulted ceilings and thick stone walls, is a perfect place for enjoying a signature cocktail or a glass of wine from one of the nearly 1,000 labels in the hotel’s wine cellar. There is also a small bar that is open by the pool in the summer months.
Facilities and activities
Onsite, you’ll find a large outdoor swimming pool and numerous hiking and bicycling trails through the extensive grounds. The hotel also offers a number of activities, many of which involve produce from the estate. The COMO Shambhala Retreat uses olive oil and lavender grown on-site to create therapeutic treatments to relax and pamper. Down in the 12th-century wine cellars, the hotel’s sommelier will be happy to take you through a tasting or wine-pairing class or lead you through a tasting of the estate’s olive oil, paired with local meat and cheese. There is also a free shuttle into Florence and Siena, run on alternating days.
