The Trident

Port Antonio, Jamaica

The Trident is an all-villa hotel on Jamaica’s northeast coast. It comprises a series of low-rise, whitewashed buildings tucked within manicured gardens that boast tropical plants and eclectic sheep sculptures. The hotel lobby welcomes you with a generously sized infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The interior decor has a minimalist design with contemporary touches like bold wall art and deep-set leather purple sofas.

With just 11 secluded villas within the property’s grounds, each with its own terrace and plunge pool, the hotel offers an intimate stay with a focus on privacy. The most secluded option is the one-bedroom Deluxe Villa, which has more outdoor space than indoor, including a sea-facing tub on the terrace.

During your stay, you can relax on the hotel’s private beach and make use of its spa, gym, library and movie room. In Port Antonio itself, dubbed the ‘Jamaican Riviera’, you’ll find a rich history to explore as well as a number of activities that take in the area’s waterfalls, caves and rainforests, all within reach along the 80-km (50-mile) shoreline.

Rooms

The 11 oceanfront villas at The Trident have the feel of a cloistered retreat and blend modernist artwork with decor inspired by the 1950s and 1960s. The villas’ style is reminiscent of a stylish contemporary art gallery, with sleek lighting, cushion-clad headboards, and animal print futons.

Each individually styled villa is bright and spacious, with a private terrace complete with plunge pool. They’re appointed with hand-selected furnishings, a king-sized bed, walk-in closet and living room, as well as an en suite bathroom and Wi-Fi.

Location

Combining both coastal views and lush mountain vistas, The Trident is located on Jamaica’s secluded northeast coast in the Portland Parish. ‘Portie’, as it’s locally nicknamed, is a scenic area with postcard-worthy beaches and jungle-carpeted hillsides.

The hotel is a two-hour drive from Kingston, and just a five-minute walk to local landmark Trident Castle. It’s also within easy driving distance to Frenchman’s Cove, San San Beach, the Blue Lagoon and the bustling jerk shacks of Boston Bay.

Food and drink

An extensive à la carte breakfast is served at the open-air Veranda restaurant, overlooking the infinity pool and coastline. Lunches are also served here, featuring a mix of Jamaican and international dishes. Evening meals are in Mike’s Supper Club, a speakeasy-inspired restaurant with live jazz each night and a menu of local Port Antonio delicacies. Meanwhile, at Time Bar, you can sip on cocktails created by the master mixologist under the glow of moody red lighting.

Families

Families are welcome and can make use of the dedicated children’s play area, the two interconnecting villas and a two-bedroom villa.

Facilities and activities

You can relax on the private beach and go snorkeling and paddleboarding, while the spa offers both indoor and outdoor treatments merging holistic techniques and philosophies. Entertainment-wise, the hotel boasts a movie screening room and library. If fitness is a priority for you while you’re away, you can make use of the gym’s state-of-the-art machines, weights, and cardio and strength equipment, with personal training and yoga classes available.

Accessibility

Though not classed as fully accessible, the hotel has flat entrances to both the public areas and the villas.
