UAN Kanazawa

UAN Kanazawa

Kanazawa, Japan

While the exterior design of the UAN Kanazawa is rather unassuming, the inside is sleekly designed with a modest, modern Japanese style. There are hints of local Kaga pride throughout the property with the Washi paper art, Kaga Noren curtains and naturally the Kaga Boucha tea served in the lobby.

The translation of the name UAN includes the character for rain, which is a nod to Kanazawa’s annual rainfall being much higher than the national average. As such, the style of the interior invokes the sense of rain through the lighting in the lobby and the ambient sounds played.

OUR OPINION:

This charming hotel gets the mix of Japanese and Western-style just right. The breakfast is excellent and the welcome lounge area, featuring sculptures, local crafts and a lending library is a great place from which to explore the beautiful city of Kanazawa. There is also a great jazz bar a couple of doors down. 'Jazz spot Bokunen' is characterful and the owner will let you choose from his extensive vinyl jazz collection for the next track if you ask nicely.

Rooms

The rooms in the UAN feel tranquil and have a simple design. They tend to be long and thin and roughly half of the 47 rooms in the property have their own terraces. Unfortunately due to the terraces being backed up to another building, very few of the rooms have much of a view, but they are comfortable and functional.

Location

Located just off one of the main roads that runs through the city, the UAN offers great access to the Kanazawa Castle gardens as well as the Omicho market. It’s a 20-minute walk or five minute taxi from both the Kanazawa station and Korinbo nightlife area as well. The jazz bar two doors down is a particular Audley favorite.

Food and drink

There is no on-site evening dining restaurant, however, the Hare-no-ma lounge which is attached to the lobby serves a few different functions. Throughout the day they serve local Kaga Boucha tea, in the evenings they serve local sake and then later in the evening provide soba noodles, an excellent after-drink snack. Breakfast is also served there and guests have the choice between a Japanese and Western breakfast.

Facilities and activities

  • The Hare-no-ma lounge serves as a workshop where guests can try their hand at a traditional Kaga crafts.
  • Fitness room.
  • Coin laundry.
