Amakhala Woodbury Tented Camp

The Eastern Cape Game Areas, South Africa

Amakhala is a collection of game lodges still owned by the same ancestors of English settlers who arrived in this part of the world over 150 years ago. Woodbury Tented Camp offers visitors to the Amakhala Game Reserve an experience under canvas, with ten large tents decorated in a simple safari style. The tents are set on raised decks, with their own private verandas overlooking the vast floodplain of Bushman’s River. The main lounge and dining areas reside in a thatched building at the heart of camp with panoramic views across the floodplain.

You can usually see a variety of animals from the camp itself, including buffalo, giraffe and zebra. The wider reserve provides superb game viewing, with all of the Big Five present, although leopard are typically elusive. Cheetah and elephant sightings can be especially memorable here. In addition, there are vast herds of antelope and wildebeest, and the birdlife is prolific.

OUR OPINION:

Amakhala offers a great choice of malaria-free lodges and camps, and we love the traditional safari feel of Woodbury Tented Camp. Coupled with the attentive service and the knowledge of the local guides, this is one our first choices for a stay on this reserve.

Rooms

Woodbury Tented Camp has ten spacious tents, each simply but comfortably furnished with a large double bed or twin beds. You have an en suite shower and basin, while toilet facilities are adjacent to your tent. There's one set of adjoining tents for families or larger groups. Resting on raised banks, each tent has views of the surrounding bush and wider reserve.

Location

Set on the malaria-free Amakhala Game Reserve, Woodbury Tented Camp is within 90 minutes’ drive of Port Elizabeth and the nearest airport. The reserve encompasses spectacular scenery around the meandering Bushman's River, with its surrounding cliffs and rolling plains, and the camp is set on a hillside overlooking all of it.

Food and drink

On return from your morning game drive, expect a large breakfast of hot and cold options, before filling up again on high tea and cakes in the afternoon. Following the evening drive, you're treated to dinner either in the dining room or around the fire-lit boma under the stars. Tea, coffee and alcoholic beverages are included in your stay, and the camp boasts a fully stocked bar.

Families

Woodbury will allow children aged six and older to stay and enjoy game drives, and recommend choosing the adjoining family tents for a comfortable stay.

Facilities and activities

The camp offers twice-daily game drives into the Amakhala Game Reserve, where the Big Five are known to roam. At the end of your afternoon drive, you have the chance to look for nocturnal species as the light fades. You can also head out on night drives to experience the bush by moonlight, which can be arranged locally. Meanwhile, guided bush walks are a great opportunity to get closer to the reserve's smaller animals and plant life. Back in camp, you can make use of the small swimming pool and surrounding loungers.

Environmental and social responsibility

Amakhala is part of the Fair Trade Tourism in South Africa (FTTSA) initiative. The Amakhala Conservation Centre is funded by the properties within the reserve, all of which donate R25 to the center from every booking.

The Amakhala Social Development Programme focuses on HIV/AIDS education and awareness raising for staff, their families and the local community and support for the nearby HIV/AIDS orphanage. For more information, see www.fairtourismsa.org.za.

As a part of its commitment to sustainability, Woodbury has also opted to install solar panels, aiming to reduce electricity use by 50%.
