Sinking back into the sofa on your private veranda, with a roaring fire at your back, a sky of brilliant stars above you and the sounds of barking impala drifting across the vast Kalahari, you come to realize what a special place Tswalu is. The size really impresses you: 1,000 sq km of land given over to restoring the natural state of the Kalahari. Motse is one of just two lodges on this vast piece of land.

The lodge reflects the surroundings, with earthen colors and organic curves. Quiver trees and other succulents adorn the pathways and outdoor areas. Tswalu is about massive horizons, unique desert vegetation and the chance to see some unusual species: roan and sable antelope are found here, as are wild dog, black rhino and Kalahari lions. A few days spent in this remarkable wilderness will be one of the best things you do in South Africa.
