NH Collection Madrid Suecia

Madrid, Spain

Located just off Madrid’s central Gran Vía, the NH Collection Madrid Suecia dates back to the 1950s and was Ernest Hemingway’s home when he visited the city. Today, the hotel has been tastefully renovated, drawing on vintage elements of its Art Deco heritage yet providing high levels of modern comfort in the Scandinavian-style furnishings ('Suecia’ is Spanish for Sweden).

Each of the 123 spacious rooms boasts hardwood floors, contemporary decor and high-quality furnishings. The sleek, modern bathrooms are well equipped and the majority feature both a bath and walk-in rainfall shower.

As well as the elegant breakfast room which has big windows overlooking the street, there is a chic rooftop lounge bar offering panoramic views of the city. A hidden highlight though, is the underground Bar Hemingway. Behind a concealed speakeasy-style entrance, it offers an extensive cocktail menu and plenty of retro charm.

OUR OPINION:

The hotel contrasts the simple decor of the rooms with elegant communal areas where you feel like you’re being transported back to the 1950s. We also love the views from the terrace.

Decorated in tones of red, white and gray, rooms are filled with natural light from the large windows. An over-sized black-and-white photo dominates one wall and the furniture is sleek and simple in a mid-century modern style. All rooms offer air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi and espresso machines, as well as en suite bathrooms with rainfall showers. Rooms in the Premium category and above also feature their own terrace or balcony.

Location

The hotel is right in the heart of Madrid, just a ten-minute walk from the Museo del Prado and Parque del Buen Retiro and less than 15 minutes from the Real Jardín Botánico. The Royal Palace can also be reached in around 25 minutes on foot.

Food and drink

The hotel’s widely varied breakfast buffet offers fresh fruit, juices, meats, cheeses and pastries with eggs and other hot dishes available made to order. For lunch and dinner, the hotel's restaurant serves meals that are both locally and internationally inspired. There is also a speakeasy-style cocktail bar, Bar Hemingway, though you’ll need to ask hotel staff to show you the hidden entrance. If you’d prefer a cocktail in the fresh air, the rooftop Ático bar offers drinks and light bites with a panoramic view of the city.
