An atmospheric city of narrow streets, small plazas and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Seville is an enthralling place to wander. Your first stop is the city’s foremost landmark, the palace-fortress known as the Alcázar, which is located on the site of a 10th-century fort. The most impressive section of the complex was constructed between 1364 and 1366, a triumph of Christian-Moorish design with ornate tiling and stuccowork.
As you explore with your guide, you’ll find a warren of tranquil courtyards, backed by gardens and water features. Renowned for their beauty, it’s not surprising the grounds of the Alcázar were chosen as a filming location for the hit TV series, Game of Thrones.
Next, your tour takes you to the towering Gothic cathedral, which is the world’s largest by volume. Completed in 1502 on the site of the city’s former mosque, it houses a gold altarpiece as well as the purported tomb of Christopher Columbus (a number of other contenders around the world also claim to house his remains).
Outside is a large courtyard filled with orange trees, which was part of the mosque. Also here is the Giralda bell tower, transformed from the original minaret. The climb to the top is quite easy, as ramps lead from level to level, a design that allowed the guards to ride up on horseback, and the views are well worth the effort.
Once you’ve had some time to explore these sights, you’ll head into the historic lanes of the Santa Cruz district, the city’s old Jewish quarter, which abuts the squares around the cathedral and Alcázar. The narrow lanes, winding streets and plant-strewn plazas here are some of the most atmospheric in Seville.
