The Legend Boutique River Resort & Spa

Chiang Rai, Thailand

The Legend Boutique River Resort & Spa is a beautiful hotel in a picturesque location. With views over the Mae Kok River, it feels peaceful and secluded and has a real family atmosphere.

The rooms are large and full of character, and come nightfall you’re surrounded by the sounds of the jungle.

In the evenings, you can choose to eat at one of the two hotel restaurants, which serve traditional Thai and Italian cuisine. The Thai restaurant boasts stunning views over the river and surrounding countryside; alternatively, you can take the hotel’s shuttle service to the center of town and sample the local food at the night markets.

OUR OPINION:

The Legend is the epitome of a boutique, characterful hotel, enjoying a beautiful location in the midst of the northern Thai countryside, whilst still being within easy access of Chiang Rai itself. The rooms are beautifully furnished in the local style, and the property impressed us with its friendly staff and gorgeous food. It’s easy to explore the Golden Triangle from here, and we feel that the night markets in Chiang Rai are well worth a visit.

Rooms

There are five different room types at The Legend Boutique River Resort & Spa, consisting of both studios and villas. All are decorated in a traditional Lanna style, with beautiful furnishings and plenty of space, featuring open-sala living areas. En suite facilities include a large wet-room style bathroom and separate toilet, and there's a small outside space in which to relax while listening to the sounds of the jungle. All well-equipped, the rooms feature a TV, safe, minibar, hair dryer, air conditioning, tea/coffee making facilities and Wi-Fi access, with either a king size bed or twin beds provided with mosquito nets.

Superior and Deluxe Studios differ in size and have views of the lush gardens, while the more spacious Grand Deluxe Studios have a double bathtub with jet massage functions, as well as a daybed that can be converted into an extra bed. The one bedroom and two bedroom Pool Villas are situated right by the river for unobstructed views. They also boast their own private swimming pool and garden area, making them ideal for families.

Location

Although The Legend is situated on the banks of the Mae Kok River, overlooking the beautiful, green countryside, it’s also only ten minutes’ drive from the center of Chiang Rai. Whilst at the hotel, you feel as though you’re in a remote, rural setting surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle, but you still have all the conveniences of modern life close to hand. The hotel offers a shuttle service to the center of Chiang Mai, right at the entrance to the night markets.

Food and drink

There's an Italian restaurant and a Thai restaurant on site, and the chefs at both of them are superb. You may even get to experience a Thai buffet, complete with a cooking demonstration. The breakfast buffet includes both hot and cold Western and Thai options and is served on the Riverside Terrace, which has stunning views over the surrounding countryside. A bar is also found on site, offering an excellent selection of wines to choose from. Alternatively, you can take the free shuttle into the center of Chiang Rai to try some of the local cuisine in the city's restaurants and night markets.

Families

Families are welcomed at The Legend, with many rooms having the option to add an extra bed, although the two bedroom Pool Villa provides the best option. There's a communal pool at the resort and a babysitting service is available.

Honeymooners

This is a fantastic option for honeymooners — the rooms are private and secluded, and the whole resort has a romantic feel to it. You can book a private, candlelit dinner either in your room or at the Italian restaurant, transforming dinner into a special, intimate occasion.

Facilities and activities

There's an infinity pool at the resort, along with a fitness center and spa. The Legend also offers a reading and internet room, complimentary Wi-Fi, babysitting and laundry services and a small souvenir shop. For transport, the hotel offers free transfers every 30 minutes in the evenings to the center of Chiang Rai, as well as sightseeing tricycle tours during the day, for a small fee.
