Taal is known as a heritage area because of its numerous ancestral homes, which date back to the Spanish and American periods in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Some of these homes are of historical significance. Taal also boasts a huge Spanish-era basilica, a hand-embroidery industry whose products and workers can be found in the public market, backyard smithies who make fan-knives, and native pastries sought out by many visitors.
There is also a small stone chapel that holds a legendary antique image of the Virgin Mary. It stands beside the well of Santa Lucia, which has an unknown origin, but whose waters are believed to be miraculous, as they are said to improve eyesight and even cure blindness.
