The Chester Grosvenor

The Chester Grosvenor

The UK

With a storied history dating to 1865, The Chester Grosvenor — now owned by the Duke of Westminster — has earned its reputation as an opulent stay.

Housed in a Grade-II-listed building that blends classic and contemporary architectural styles, the hotel is traditional but not dated, with thoughtfully preserved period features and modern enhancements.

From chunky white pillars and top-hatted doormen at the entrance, to chessboard marble flooring, and original paintings from the Duke of Westminster’s collection in the lobby — you’ll find touches of old-school elegance everywhere.

Light-filled, spacious, and individually decorated, the rooms and suites are similarly refined, with a charming mix of traditional design and contemporary comfort. There are two award-winning dining spots at the hotel, and plenty of restaurants close by. The hotel’s main restaurant, Arkle, is a sophisticated spot known for its attentive service, seasonal tasting menus and splendid cheese trolley, while the Brasserie offers French bistro-style dining in more laid-back surroundings.

Highlights include the lavish Champagne bar, a spa that includes a salt grotto and crystal steam room, and a convenient location right in the heart of Chester, with key attractions all within walking distance.

OUR OPINION:

We love the hotel’s tangible sense of tradition, sophisticated air of glamor, and prestigious and convenient address in the heart of Chester.

Rooms

Each room and suite has a different size, shape, and style, but they’re all light-filled and spacious, with a mix of traditional and contemporary styling. Neutral tones and classic shapes are punctuated with splashes of primary hues and plush fabrics. Additionally, you’ll find custom-made linens, high end music systems, and Elemis toiletries. Book the Presidential Suite and you’ll also get a formal dining area and sweeping views of Chester’s black-and-white timbered architecture.

Location

Occupying a convenient position in the middle of Chester, within the city walls and right next to the Eastgate clock (the most photographed in England after Big Ben), the hotel is well-placed for exploring both the city and nearby North Wales. The cathedral and Roman amphitheater are a five-minute stroll away, and it’s just an hour’s scenic drive through mountains and valleys to the resort town of Llandudno, as well as Conwy Castle and Snowdonia National Park (Eryri), and just 40 minutes to Liverpool.
