Busta House Hotel

Busta House

Shetland, The UK

History is tangible at Busta House. The former home of a local laird (member of the Scottish gentry), the hotel is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited house in Shetland. Its roots date back to the 16th century, and the buildings have been lovingly restored after a tumultuous family history almost brought the estate to ruin. Wandering the grounds, you’ll spy gargoyles in the garden brought from the House of Commons by the Lord Lieutenant of Shetland — another previous owner. And while in the Long Room lounge, you can study photographs from when Queen Elizabeth II took tea there in 1960.

Today, Busta House blends classic decor with modern hospitality. The restaurant serves Shetland dishes prepared from island ingredients, while the lounge offers an impressive selection of over 200 local and international whiskies.

Surrounded by heather-coated moorland, the hotel is a peaceful and convenient jumping-off point for discovering Shetland. It sits on Busta Voe, a sheltered coastal inlet, with plenty of hiking routes on the doorstep. You’ll also be within driving distance of the islands’ main sights, including the Jarlshof prehistoric settlement, volcanic Eshaness cliffs, and the archipelago’s main town, Lerwick.

OUR OPINION:

We love the traditional Scottish charm of Busta House, especially the snug Long Room lounge — with its roaring open fire and comfy armchairs, it’s a welcoming place to return to after a day exploring the islands.

Rooms

Busta House bedrooms come in a selection of sizes, from singles and twins to a family room, each named after a different Shetland island. All are individually decorated in a traditional style, with quilted bedspreads, damask wallpaper, and floral curtains. A few also retain features from the building’s history, such as exposed sections of the original external stone wall. The decor may be classic, but you’ll find all the modern amenities you need for a comfortable stay. Some rooms offer views over the garden and the waters of Busta Voe beyond.

Location

Situated on the sheltered shores of Busta Voe on mainland Shetland, Busta House gives you a secluded yet convenient base. The hotel lies between Brae village and the red-rock island of Muckle Roe, putting you a 40-minute drive from the main town of Lerwick and close to several coastal walks, including the picturesque route to Muckle Roe Lighthouse.

Food and drink

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner served in the hotel restaurant, with menus featuring locally sourced ingredients.
  • Bar with an extensive selection of wines and gins.
  • The Long Room lounge has a collection of over 200 whiskies.

Accessibility

Due to the age of the buildings, there’s no lift at Busta House and the bedrooms aren’t wheelchair accessible.
