Montage Palmetto Bluff's Main Inn, with its white clapboard exterior and manicured grounds, is a fitting entrance for what lies beyond. Freshwater lagoons surrounded by herons and oystercatchers are scattered throughout the resort, with cottages and guesthouses dotting their banks. Comprising two separate villages, Moreland and Wilson, there are a lot of activities to take part in, from shooting clays at the Shooting Club, taking boat trips around the surrounding marshes on the May River, or strolling along the walkways of the nature reserve.
The resort isn't located directly on a beach, but we recommend getting out on the water if you can. Kayaks and canoes are available for you to use and there's also a boating club that runs a number of trips over to several beaches, as well as daily wildlife watching tours. You can also take a trip on Grace, a 1913 gas-powered motor yacht.
There are multiple dining facilities, ranging from fine restaurants to more casual cafés. Most have sweeping views over the river or the surrounding leafy landscape.
The hotel runs a culinary program in the evenings. Fresh lemonade and homemade cookies are served on the porch at the River House in the afternoons, and after dinner, you can choose different marshmallows from the s'mores cart to roast over a fire-pit.
Encompassing a laid-back yet luxurious atmosphere, we think Montage Palmetto Bluff has perfected the balance of relaxation and exploration. We also like its prime location on the banks of the May River and its evening culinary program is a great way to be introduced to Southern traditions.
