A peaceful ecolodge in the countryside, close to the villages of Saint-Alexis-des-Monts and Saint Paulin, Le Baluchon is a good choice if you're looking to spend time amid Québec's rural landscape.
Rooms are spread across four lodges spaced through the extensive grounds. Fresh air and relaxation are top of the agenda, with plenty of outdoor activities offered on and around the property, from forest hikes and horse riding to kayaking along the meandering Rivière du Loup. You can also relax in the small but welcoming spa, unwinding with an outdoor massage or organic beauty or body treatment. The food here is another highlight, from the excellent buffet breakfasts and wholesome lunches to three-course dinners, all of which use fresh locally sourced ingredients.
Life moves a little slower at Le Baluchon, and we love its peaceful setting in the Québécois countryside, as well as the range of activities you can do here. Almost everything around the property is conducted in French, but if you go with the flow, you’ll have a lovely stay.

Rooms
Rooms are spread across four main lodges, and while there are more than 90 in total, they are well spaced out so it never feels busy. Each room is individually designed and inspired by nature, combining rustic and modern styles, and while they could have been finished to a higher standard, they each have measures in place to reduce the hotel’s ecological footprint. The rooms are flooded with natural light, and each lodge has a room with a sauna and whirlpool. For something extra special, the De La Rivière Chalet is more spacious and offers a little more privacy.
Location
This eco-friendly resort sits in extensive grounds, including an area of agricultural land. Its peaceful location is just 20 minutes from the village of Saint-Alexis-des-Monts and an hour-and-a-half drive from Montréal. With a focus on relaxation and rejuvenation, the property also ensures that it has minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
Food and drink
The award-winning cuisine at Le Baluchon is modern and refined, and the hotel prides itself on using local produce wherever possible. You can enjoy organic, natural snacks from the Au Bout du Monde Eco Café on site, from freshly baked bread and soup, to black truffle pasta and pear tart for lunch. A generous buffet breakfast is also served every day at the café. For dinner, head to the Salle a Manger, where you’ll sit down to gourmet dishes, excellent desserts and an extensive wine list.
Facilities and activities
There are many activities on offer at Le Baluchon throughout the summer months, from horse riding, mountain biking and hiking to kayaking and canoeing. All incur small charges that are payable locally. We also recommend making the most of the 40 km (25 miles) of hiking trails that wind through the property's forested areas and along the river. You’ll be given a trail map when you arrive at the resort that details the length and difficulty of each trail. Please be aware that the trails aren't always clearly marked, but they're worth exploring just to take in the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Le Baluchon has a welcoming (though slightly dated) spa where you can enjoy a full range of massages and treatments, all carried out using organic products. The resort is also home to its very own Nordic Spa, where you can relax in outdoor hot pools right next to the Rivière du Loup.
Environmental and social responsibility
This property has its own recycling facility and takes water treatment very seriously in order to protect the nearby river. Energy is conserved wherever possible, and motorised vehicles aren't permitted on site. The property also exclusively uses environmentally friendly cleaning products.
