Val Jalbert Village Historique

Val Jalbert Village Historique

Charlevoix & Saguenay - Lac St. Jean, Canada

Staying in this reconstructed 1920s village gives you time to discover the history of the area, as well as enjoy the beautiful surrounding scenery of lush forests and the rushing river. Dating back to 1909, but with most of the buildings constructed in the 1920s, this historic pulp and paper mill is preserved and restored to provide a unique insight into life in the early part of the 20th century.

There’s a range of rooms available providing the option to stay in period village houses, mini-chalets, or modern tiny-homes. There’s one restaurant on site featuring a local, classic menu inspired by the region. The magnificent Ouiatchouan waterfall provides a dramatic backdrop to the principal mill building, and there’s a spectacular viewing platform here, and a cable car to take you to the top of the falls for the best views.

OUR OPINION:

Val Jalbert provides a unique stay, stepping back in history. While the accommodation is simple, the setting offers easy access to the region’s main attractions and an escape into nature.

Rooms

The village offers just 25 delightful guest rooms for overnight visitors, these are located either in period village houses, mini-chalets in the woods along the river, or tiny modern houses by the lake. Each has been sympathetically restored to a very high standard, offering all the period charm, along with modern day conveniences, including a modern bathroom, wooden floors, Wi-Fi, mini fridge, coffee machine, umbrella, and air conditioning. The newer tiny homes on the lake also feature a full kitchen, outdoor fire pit and picnic table.

Location

Val Jalbert Village is set just off the shores of Lac Saint Jean, tucked away in the forest. The buildings and accommodation are spread across the facility. The property is about ten minutes’ drive from the small towns of Chambord and Roberval, on the southwest side of Lac Saint Jean. Many of the area’s attractions are within a 30-minute drive.

Food and drink

Please note that there’s only one restaurant on site and it does book up quickly. The restaurant is cosy and simple in a large barn style building made of large stones and wood. The menu heavily features local produce and serves classic favourites inspired by the region. If staying in a tiny home, breakfast and dinner can be delivered directly to your home.

Facilities and activities

Included in your stay, is access to the historic village. In the village itself you can wander into the restored general store, the schoolhouse, and see the wooden workers' houses, which are preserved in their derelict state. There is a guided tour in a 1920s-style trolley, free walking tours, and the option to visit the pulp mill. Several scenic hiking and cycling trails await in the forest and along the river as well.
