This guided walking tour leads you through Johnston Canyon in all its winter glory. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Banff and driven along the Bow Valley Parkway to the trailhead, which offers views along the way and a good chance of spotting wildlife.
When you reach the carpark, you’ll be given a pair of ice cleats before heading off on the walk, trekking across steel walkways built into the canyon walls. You’ll be able to look down into the gorge below and take photos of the pillars of ice and your knowledgeable guide will provide information about how the canyon was formed and answer any questions you might have about the geography and history of the area. The walkways lead you through a small cave into the frozen lower waterfalls, before your final stop at the upper falls, framed by gigantic ice pillars and frequented by courageous ice climbers. Here you can enjoy a cup of fresh hot chocolate and a few homemade cookies. Once refreshed, you’ll make your way back through the canyon to the van for your return transfer to Banff.
