The family-run Hotel Belmar was one of the first hotels to open in Monteverde, but the owners' commitment to the upkeep of the hotel, its décor and amenities for guests also make it one of the best in the area. It remains current with modern concepts, such as its on-site micro-brewery, its craft cocktails and juice bar, and its farm-to-table spa and restaurant.
The hotel itself comprises two buildings built in the style of a Swiss chalet with rustic wooden furniture throughout, its own nature trail in the grounds and beautiful views.
This is our favourite hotel in Monteverde. We love the tranquil cloudforest setting, comfortable rooms, welcoming atmosphere and attention to detail throughout.

Rooms
The hotel has two categories of standard guest rooms (Peninsula and Peninsula Superior rooms) and six categories of the more luxurious Chalet Deluxe rooms. Peninsula and Peninsula Superior rooms are housed on the first and second floors of the main building and boast views of the Nicoya Peninsula, with the former featuring two queen size beds and a balcony and the latter offering a king size bed and larger terrace. Amenities include Wi-Fi access, a safe and an all-day coffee delivery service. The Chalet Deluxe rooms are situated in the chalet building opposite, surrounded by the lush forest, with floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies and terraces allowing guests to immerse themselves in nature. All are spacious and wood-furnished, with the higher category rooms also featuring private Jacuzzis for that added bit of luxury.
Location
The hotel enjoys a peaceful hillside location between the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve and the quieter reserve of Santa Elena. The village of Santa Elena is located four kilometres from the hotel and has a few cafés and shops to explore after a day of tours or walking in the reserve. The town of Monteverde is slightly larger and has something of a backpacker vibe, but it boasts a good choice of restaurants should you want to try different dining options.
Food and drink
Guests at Belmar can enjoy a delicious spread for breakfast which includes homemade jams, granola and baked goods as well as fresh fruit, pancakes, omelettes and the Costa Rican speciality gallo pinto. The restaurant balcony is a lovely place to watch the birds in the morning whilst enjoying your breakfast. Alternatively, you can request breakfast in bed or on your own terrace. The main restaurant also opens for lunch and dinner, with a particular emphasis on organic produce and a farm-to-table concept. In the hotel's chalet building there's a juice and tea bar, where you can enjoy freshly squeezed fruit juices and smoothies, house blended teas, organic coffee and snacks. In the main building inventive cocktails and craft beers can be enjoyed at the lounge bar.
Honeymooners
The hotel's Sunset room is particularly suited to honeymooners, offering a romantic setting in the cloudforest with views of the Pacific Ocean and a terrace with an outdoor Jacuzzi.
Facilities and activities
The Belmar is set in a pristine cloudforest reserve and there are a number of nature trails that guests can enjoy during their stay. Tours can also be taken of the organic garden and greenhouse. The hotel offers a wide range of spa services, a Jacuzzi in a glass-walled gazebo and yoga classes.
Environmental and social responsibility
The hotel has a Level 5 Certificate for Sustainable Tourism in recognition of its sustainable tourism model. It has a number of water and electricity saving measures and waste reduction programmes in place, using solar panels for heating water, rain water harvesting, environmentally friendly cleaning products and toiletries and energy-saving light bulbs, among many other measures to reduce its environmental impact. The property also supports a number of local community projects focusing on health, infrastructure and education, employing and training over 95% of its staff locally.
