Also known as Cabinas Chacon, the Savegre Mountain Hotel is located in San Gerardo de Dota, in the Talamanca mountains of Costa Rica.
Don Chacon and his family arrived in the area in 1954, and settled in this beautiful valley for agriculture, only opening up to visitors in the 1970s when a few tourists arrived for trout fishing. The property is still run by the family who are constantly improving the hotel whilst continuing to farm the surrounding land.
Over 170 species of birds have been seen in the area, and this is a great place to see the resplendent quetzal. The hotel has 41 simple rooms with heating, hot water and en suite facilities. The cosy Junior Suites have good views as well as fireplaces.
A newly-opened spa provides the perfect place to relax after a day's exploring, and the lounge-bar is a great place to share your day's bird sightings with fellow travellers, especially at happy hour. Evening meals tend to be served buffet-style and have an additional cost.
