The best time to visit Honduras is during the dry season between December and April. Temperatures are warm, sitting between 26°C and 32°C, and downpours are less likely — although remember they can still occur, as Honduras is a tropical country.
However, travel to Honduras can be enjoyable all year-round.
The period between May and November brings hotter, more humid conditions, with temperatures reaching the early thirties, and heavy afternoon downpours. The later months of the year carry the threat of hurricanes.
Temperatures don’t vary dramatically throughout the year, staying around 27°C to 32°C along the coast and islands, and 33°C to 37°C inland. Be aware the humidity causes the temperature to feel much hotter than it truly is during the country’s wet season.
Month-by-month guide for travelling in Honduras
Visiting Honduras in January - March
Being the driest time of the year, January to March is Honduras’s busy season. It offers perhaps the most comfortable temperatures, enticing many Europeans and North Americans looking to escape their own winters. This period also coincides with major public festivals around the country, which can cause hotels to reach capacity: availability can be a challenge.
Events & Festivals
- Semana Santa (Holy Week) sees Easter celebrations and religious parades across the country.
Visiting Honduras in April
April sees Honduras segue from its dry season to its wet season. Rain can be expected, but generally not as heavy as in the true wet season. The humidity combines with some of the highest temperatures of the year, which can prove uncomfortable for first-timers to Central America. Holy Week can be busy, as many Hondurans use this week-long break as an opportunity to travel.
Events & Festivals
- Pods of whale sharks begin to frequent the waters around the Bay Islands, staying until September.
- Punta Gorda Festival (12th April) celebrates the indigenous Garifuna people, who settled in Roatán in the Bay Islands in 1797, through high-energy traditional dance and music performances.
- Semana Santa (Holy Week) sees Easter celebrations and religious parades across the country.
Visiting Honduras in May - October
During these months, most of Honduras experiences high rainfall. Temperatures peak early on, and become slightly more bearable as the year continues. While the weather isn’t ideal, travel during this period can be more cost-effective as hotel occupancy generally drops off.
Events & Festivals
- Independence Day (15th September) sees schools participating in three days of contests for the best-executed music and dance performances.
- Pods of whale sharks begin to frequent the waters around the Bay Islands, staying until September.
- San Isidro Festival in La Ceiba is a Mardi-Gras style party that takes over the streets of the city, with hundreds of thousands coming to witness the festivities.
Visiting Honduras in November - December
Honduras’s wet season turns back to dry during November, though the Bay Islands and some coastal areas might see rain all the way through the end of the year. This can be a great time to visit Honduras, when visitor numbers remain low and crowds are uncommon.
Events & Festivals
- Honduras is a heavily Catholic country, and celebrations take place throughout the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
