Windermere Estate

Munnar, India

The plantation bungalow at Windermere was the long-term home of Captain Matthew, who for many years served as the chairman of the Cochin Port Authority. In the last few years, his son, Dr Simon, has added a number of additional cottages that resemble Swiss chalets, a new restaurant, a sitting and games room, and a tea hut to provide a greater range of facilities.

In the gardens there are designated areas for bonfires, barbecues and hammocks. From here guests can climb up to Windermere’s viewpoint, which gives fantastic 360-degree views of the estate and surrounding area.

OUR OPINION:

The Windermere is a good option for a stay in the Munnar region and remains an Audley favourite.

Rooms

Windermere offers an intimate number of rooms spread across five buildings. All rooms are simple but clean and comfortable, and each has its own private sit-out area. The higher categories of the cottages and the planter’s villas have fantastic views over the surrounding area.

During your stay you should be prepared for a fluctuating electricity supply due to the mountain location; it would be wise to keep a small torch with you.

Location

Windermere Estate is well-located, being just six kilometres from the town centre. It's set within a large coffee and cardamom plantation.

Food and drink

Simple set lunches can be taken under the shade of a tree, while in the evenings a set three-course meal is available in the restaurant. Both multi-cuisine and local Indian dishes are served. Please note that Windermere has a set menu, so please speak to the staff beforehand if you have dietary requirements or allergies they need to be aware of.

While the hotel doesn't have a licence to serve alcohol, you're welcome to bring your own. This must be consumed within the privacy of your room.

Facilities and activities

Windermere organises a two-hour plantation walk at 3pm each day. It's possible to see how cardamom is processed in the nearby store, and if you're feeling energetic, you can trek to the caves on the plantation.

Accessibility

The property has a lot of steps, which may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.
