Souji-in Shukubo

Souji-in traces its history back to the early 12th century, but has been providing accommodation for visitors to Koya since 1994. Unlike other shukubo, Souji-in boasts such modern conveniences as an elevator and air conditioning, and all rooms have a Western-style toilet (some rooms also have a private bathroom), a rare commodity among the other shukubo on Mount Koya.

Rooms are tastefully decorated and there is the option of either Western beds or traditional tatami matting and futon style bedding. Shojin ryori — the vegan cuisine served throughout all of the accommodation in Koya — is served to you in your room by one of the working monks who live and worship at the temple. Morning prayer service can be observed daily from around 6am and meditation classes are also available on request.

Souji-in is popular with the Japanese imperial family and other celebrities such as Asashoryu, the Sumo Grand Champion, who appreciate the opportunity to commune with the monks in a little more comfort than is commonly found on Mount Koya.
