Malangen Resort

Tromsø, Norway

A waterfront lodge looking over Malangenfjord, Malangen Resort transports you to a bona fide corner of Norwegian Arctic wilderness despite being roughly an hour’s drive from Tromsø. Its speciality is northern lights viewing experiences, but there’s a huge range of outdoor activities you can take part in here, in both summer and winter.

On the larger side for a wilderness lodge (there are 86 rooms), Malangen Resort is ideal for families who want lots of options for exploring, and the convenience of a modern resort, with everything you need in one location. Everything is within walking distance, from the restaurant to the fjordside hot tub and glass-fronted sauna. There’s also Camp Nikka — two recreated lavvus (Sámi herdsmen’s tents) where Sámi cultural activities are held.

What particularly stands out for us is that the resort has a roster of self-guided activities, with more unusual options alongside outdoor pursuits. These include a trail around local Sámi rock art, and a birdwatching trail around nearby Kobbenvågen nature reserve. Having your own rental car isn’t essential for visiting the resort in summer, but it does allow you to explore some of these self-guided suggestions more easily.

OUR OPINION:

Easy to reach from Tromsø, Malangen Resort’s fjord-side setting is isolated enough to make you feel like you’ve got away from it all. We’re also impressed with the range of outdoor activities and their family-friendly approach.

Rooms

All rooms at the resort have views over Malangenfjord, and there are several room types. Standard and premium hotel rooms are located in the main resort buildings. Then there are also a range of standalone apartments, sea-view cabins, premium sea-view cabins and premium waterfront cabins, all of which have kitchenettes, seating areas, heating and balconies. Wi-Fi isn’t available in the cabins, and none of the rooms have TVs — the emphasis here is very much on experiencing your surroundings and drinking in those views. All rooms have tea and coffee making facilities, though self-catering is only possible in apartments and cabins.

Hugging the edge of the rugged Malangen Peninsula, Malangen Resort is an hour to 75 minutes by car or transfer from Tromsø’s international airport. As well as looking out over the fjord it takes its name from, the resort also has views of mountains (snow-drenched in winter) and is surrounded by wild forests.
