With a population of over 630,000, Chiclayo is Peru's fourth largest city and is also one of the country's fastest growing cities.
Although the city is rather unattractive and has little to see of historical interest, it is vibrant and thriving with good opportunities to meet Peruvians. Residents of the city call the town the Peruvian capital of friendship.
Chiclayo is now the base to explore some of the most important and recent archaeological discoveries in Peru such as the Royal Tombs of Sipan, the Tucume pyramids and associated museums. Despite its blandness (plus the occasional whiff of fishmeal in the air), the city offers good hotels and services.

Built by the Mochica culture (200 to 600 AD) this is where the tomb of the Lord of Sipan was discovered. The gold-laden tomb is considered to be the richest and one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the last 30 years in the Americas.
