Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Sao Miguel. Arriving on the largest island of the Azores, São Miguel, you’ll pick up your car and drive into the capital city of Ponta Delgada. After a little downtime following your flight, you’ll meet your guide for a walking tour of the city’s sights and a tasting at Mercado da Graça.
-
Today, your driver-guide will meet you at your hotel and take you northwest of the city to the twin lakes of Sete Cidades, where you’ll get the chance to explore both by bicycle and 4x4 before returning to your hotel. The afternoon is yours to explore the island of São Miguel at your leisure, perhaps visiting some local tea factories.
-
This morning you’ll meet your driver-guide for a full day of hiking near Sanguinho on the eastern side of São Miguel, about an hour and a half from Ponta Delgada.
-
Today you’ll drive to Furnas, known for its hot springs. After arriving at your hotel you’ll join a shared tour to see how a traditional cozido is prepared and cooked using the hot springs as a heat source. You’ll spend the rest of the day at leisure before enjoying the same cozido for dinner.
-
You have the entire day to spend at leisure. You might wish to visit the nearby towns of Povoação and Nordeste, or perhaps visit the beach at Ribeira Quente.
-
You’ll have an early start today as you make your own way to the airport to catch a flight to your next island, Pico. In particular, Pico is known among the Azores for wine production, so you’ll spend the afternoon enjoying a light hike through its vineyards and tasting some local varietals.
-
Discover another island today by taking a ferry from Pico to nearby Faial. You’ll drive through the island’s tree-laden interior and along its coastline, also paying a visit to the Capelinhos Volcano, which developed from eruptions in the 1950s. You’ll finish the day in the main city of Horta, exploring local sights until it’s time to take your ferry back to Pico.
-
This morning, you’ll enjoy a whale and dolphin watching trip off the coast of Pico. There'll be a fair amount of waiting in the boat while learning about the 28 various species that pass through the Azores each year, but hopefully, your patience will be rewarded with a few sightings. The rest of the afternoon is yours to spend relaxing at your hotel.
-
This morning you’ll fly to your final island, Terceira, so named because it was the third island to be discovered. After picking up your car and settling into your hotel, you’ll head out with your guide for a walking tour of Angra do Heroísmo, the island’s historic capital.
-
You have a full day at leisure to explore Terceira. You might consider descending into Algar do Carvão, an ancient lava tunnel, or driving up Monte do Brasil on the edge of Angra for a picnic with a panoramic view of the city.
-
Bid farewell to the Azores today as you drive to the airport for your onward flight. Your return flight will arrive the same day.
