Sigtuna and Uppsala day trip

This privately guided tour gives you the chance to get out of Stockholm for a day so you can discover some of Sweden’s heritage. Exactly what you’ll see will be tailored to your interests, whether that’s history, food, culture or a mix of all three.

With a guide, you’ll head north of the capital to the town of Sigtuna, the oldest in Sweden, founded more than 1,000 years ago. Here, you can delve into many eras of Sweden’s early history, visiting castles, palaces, the country’s oldest street and the world’s densest concentration of runestones.

Continuing onward, you’ll visit Uppsala. The fourth-largest city in Sweden, it’s home to a lively university population that helps support a thriving landscape of eateries where you can try local treats. You can also visit the country’s largest cathedral and Museum Gustavianum, the university museum.

Your day begins as you’re picked up from your hotel by your private driver-guide. They’ll discuss options for what you could see and do during the tour, based on your interests, as you head to your first stop, Sigtuna, which is around 50 km (31 miles) northwest of Stockholm.

Established by King Erik the Victorious over 1,000 years ago, Sigtuna was Sweden’s first town. Here, you can view the world’s densest concentration of runestones and stroll Sweden’s oldest street, Stora Gatan, whose layout has remained unchanged over the centuries. You’ll pass historic wooden houses, shops, restaurants and cafés as your guide tells you more about the city’s past. You might also like to visit Sigtuna’s castles, palaces, museums and medieval church ruins, and explore its labyrinth of lanes.

You’ll then head to Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth-largest city and oldest university town. Here, you can see Sweden’s largest cathedral, Uppsala Domkyrka, visit the university museum, Museum Gustavianum, and taste some local delicacies in some of the many eateries that dot the city. Uppsala is also home to nobleman and renowned botanist Carl von Linné’s home and gardens, which you can also visit.

At the end of the tour, your driver-guide will return you to your hotel.
