I first left South Africa at the age of 17 to finish high school in Canada. Following that, my college years were spent in the Midwest of the United States in Richmond, Indiana, which is also where I met my incredible wife. My love for home has always been a guiding light; I studied Politics and was keen to apply my knowledge and embrace the challenges therein soon after graduation.
Upon my return to South Africa, my passion for travel engulfed me. I turned to a field that gave me the opportunity to share my immense pride for my continent and its people and my fascination with amassing new experiences for visitors coming from all over the world. Travel has etched an indelible mark on my life and I’m excited to help you find out what more it has in store for you.

Q&A with Sidingo

What’s your most vivid travel moment?
Bungee jumping off of Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa. The first part involves a zipline transfer to the centre of the bridge. After my legs were secured to the cord, I could only inch forward to the ledge in preparation. I remember feeling like my soul had left my body for a good 10 seconds before a rush of sheer adrenaline surged through every fiber when I looped around the bridge with a full view of the valley below. When your feet eventually reconvene with solid earth, you feel almost giddy — a must!

Which book, film or artwork captures South Africa the most?
I think the film 'Invictus' gives a glimpse of what sport has done and continues to do for South Africa. The movie focuses on the South African national men's rugby team that won the Rugby World Cup in 1995 — one year after the first democratic elections in 1994. The film fascinates me because it's the same formula that seems to unite the country during times of high tension. The two most recent victories in 2019 and 2023 respectively, increased the national mood substantially since it was a victory that everyone felt a part of due to the team’s diversity.

Your best piece of travel advice?
Have a plan for the day, but leave space for it to surprise you too. Being well-prepared for the journey is extremely important and should not be overlooked, but I have found that the serendipity of a chance conversation that leads to the discovery of a new favorite coffee spot can live long in the memory beyond the return home. Travel is about enjoyment and truly appreciating the present moment and the newness it brings with each interaction.
