Kanana Camp

Nxabega Concession, Botswana

Offering an intimate, personalized stay, Kanana Camp has an air of exclusivity due to its small number of luxurious, safari-style tents. The open-sided main camp area is set in a circle around a huge fig tree and is raised on stilts for optimal views of the surrounding bush.

When not on safari, guests can unwind on the comfy sofas in the lounge, with the bar and communal dining area located on opposite sides. The polished wooden deck has steps leading down to a sandy boma area, which is right next to the boating station.

At night, lanterns are set about the lodge and a fire blazes in the boma; creating a wonderfully authentic atmosphere as you exchange stories with fellow guests under a blanket of stars, accompanied by the sounds of the bush and the grunts of hippo.

OUR OPINION:

Kanana is one of the most peaceful, relaxing bush camps in the Okavango Delta, surrounded by some truly breathtaking wetland scenery. The tents are spacious, comfortable and perfectly positioned to enjoy the stunning location. It's definitely the place to stay for anybody interested in water-based activities and game watching, while birding opportunities are also superb.

Rooms

Kanana has just eight spacious and very comfortable safari-style tents. Offering a high level of privacy, the tents are built on decks overlooking the Delta, featuring sliding mesh doors, twin beds and en suite bathrooms with hot showers. Perhaps one of the best advantages of this camp is that the tents can be opened up completely, allowing guests to become immersed in their surroundings without needing to leave their accommodation. The tents also feature a shaded veranda furnished with a table and comfy chairs, making a great spot for relaxing, wildlife spotting and taking in the beautiful scenery of the Delta.

Location

Kanana Camp is located on the western side of the Okavango Delta. The lodge itself is set on a small island that sits in between two of the Delta channels, allowing guests to take part in water-based game viewing activities in boats and mokoros.

Food and drink

Dining is a communal affair, giving you the opportunity to chat with other guests about your safari experience. The varied seasonal menus feature delicious fresh food, while a glass of regional wine is the perfect end to a day in the bush.

Facilities and activities

Activities from Kanana include drives in open 4x4s, although these are not the major focal point of the camp. It's also possible to enjoy mokoro trips, guided walks, night drives, boat trips and even a spot of fishing. During the heat of the day, you might like to relax around the small pool or simply sit on your veranda enjoying the views.

During the wet season, it's well worth taking a boat trip to the heronry, about an hour away. This is truly a spectacular sight, with all manner of storks, ibis, egrets, herons and pelicans rearing their young in nests among the low trees and swampy fig thickets. The boating is a highlight at Kanana, with an array of birdlife and a number of resident hippo often seen in the surrounding lakes and channels.
