Oddballs Enclave

Oddballs Enclave

Gunn's Concession, Botswana

Oddballs Enclave is the epitome of an authentic safari camp, offering a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. Made completely of wood and offering five simple Meru-style tents, the camp overlooks a seasonal floodplain where long grasses and reeds are covered in floodwater during the dry season (April to October).

Each tent has a private outdoor bathroom, hidden behind wooden fencing complete with flush toilet, sink and a warm bucket shower that you fill yourself. The main communal area is built on a large deck that gives you spectacular views over the plains as you dine and relax. At night, you can sit in the reclining chairs and gaze up at the constellation-strewn night sky, perhaps accompanied by the shrieks and howls of passing hyena.

Most of the staff and guides at Oddballs are from the local villages and are incredibly welcoming, as well as being knowledgeable about the area’s wildlife. During your stay here, they’ll take you out on guided bush walks and mokoro (traditional wooden canoe) trips through the waterways in search of wildlife.

OUR OPINION:

Oddballs Enclave, while simple, offers an authentic, laid-back safari experience in a remote, wild location. We like the variety of activities on offer, which provides a change from the usual game drives. A great-value option in the heart of the Delta.

Rooms

The camp’s five Meru-style canvas tents are undoubtedly simple, but this works well with Oddballs’s overall feel as an authentic wilderness camp. Boasting private decks that directly face the floodplain, each tent has twin beds or a double bed and a lockable chest for valuables. A few steps outside your tent, well hidden behind wooden fencing, is your private bathroom, which comes with a flush toilet and a traditional warm bucket shower that you fill yourself.

Location

The camp is situated in Gunn’s Concession, in the central Okavango Delta. Its sister property, Oddballs Camp, is close by and the airstrip is right by the camp, but otherwise you’re completely surrounded by wilderness. From the deck or on your day’s activities you might see elephant, lion, buffalo and a wide variety of plains game.

Food and drink

Meals are shared communally on the main deck, where the long table is set facing the plains. With such a small number of guests, this is an intimate experience where you can get to know both the small team of staff and fellow safari-goers, sharing tales of wildlife encounters. The food is cooked on-site by the camp’s chefs, comprising good quality meats, fresh vegetables and salads. Complimentary drinks are available at all times.

Facilities and activities

Morning and afternoon bush walks give you a chance to explore the nearby Chief's Island, home to plains game and a wealth of birdlife. During the dry season, when there's more water on the ground, you'll also spend time traversing the mysterious lily and reed waterways of the Delta in a mokoro (a traditional wooden canoe). There may also be the opportunity to visit your guide's village, where you can learn more about life in the Delta.

Environmental and social responsibility

The camp is designed to be environmentally friendly, using solar energy to heat the water and power up batteries rather than a generator.
