Belmond Hotel das Cataratas

Belmond Hotel das Cataratas

Iguaçu Falls, Brazil

The Belmond Hotel das Cataratas is the perfect base from which to enjoy the falls, offering a great standard of accommodation in an elegant Portuguese-colonial building. It has all the comfort and facilities you'd expect of a Belmond hotel, as well as an ideal location right at the Iguaçu Falls. The real bonus of the hotel is that, as you're within the Brazilian National Park, you have exclusive access to the falls early in the morning and in the evening while the park is shut and the crowds have left, allowing you to enjoy this magnificent sight in privacy.

All rooms are decorated in a colonial style, and the property does really well at retaining a personal and boutique feel, despite being a large hotel. Outside you are surrounded by lush grounds filled with trees, with plenty of loungers for relaxing in the sun while listening to the sound of the cascading water.

OUR OPINION:

A firm Audley favorite that really can't be beaten in terms of location. The hotel is not only recommended for its location though, and continuing excellent feedback from returning clients means the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas provides a real touch of luxury for your stay at the Iguaçu Falls.

Rooms

There are several different room categories at the Das Cataratas hotel. All of the rooms feature Wi-Fi, an LCD TV, fully stocked minibar, and paintings of local flora and fauna by a Brazilian artist.

The entry level rooms are the Superior and Deluxe rooms, which are spacious options with queen size beds and views of either the pool or the jungle. The Deluxe rooms differ slightly in that they can accommodate an extra bed, turning them into triples, while the Deluxe Falls View rooms allow you to look out to the falls themselves for something a little more special.

Junior Suites have a separate living area and can accommodate an extra bed, offering views over the jungle. The hotel's top suites are the Cataratas Suites, which have superb views of your surroundings from four balconies, along with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, making them a great option for families.

Location

The best placed hotel in Iguaçu, the Das Cataratas is located a five-minute stroll from the walkways and viewing platforms on the Brazilian side of the Iguaçu Falls. Although located away from any towns, the quality of the hotel's restaurants and its range of facilities mean this shouldn't be a problem. Added to this, the tranquil forest surroundings of the hotel, disturbed only by the roar of the falls themselves, make this a relaxing place to be after a day exploring the falls.

Food and drink

The hotel boasts two fantastic restaurants. The Ipê Grill is a relaxed affair adjacent to the pool. Breakfast is served here and during the day and into the evening traditional Brazilian style barbecued meats and buffets are available for you to enjoy. The Itaipú Restaurant offers a more formal dining option, with tables for fine dining available for the evening in the restaurant itself or on the veranda, with views stretching across to the falls. Bar Taroba also offers a great spot to relax with a traditional Brazilian caipirinha in hand. We recommend making reservations for dinner on arrival at the hotel as during busy periods it can be difficult to get a table, especially if you would like to dine at the Itaipú Restaurant.

Families

Some of the hotel's rooms can offer an extra bed for children, and some of the suites are well suited to families. Please discuss your requirements with your specialist for the best option.

Facilities and activities

The hotel has an outdoor pool for you to enjoy, this is heated during the winter months (May to August) and unheated during the warmer seasons. The hotel also has an extensive gym and a tennis court for those of a more active disposition.

There's a great concierge service at the hotel, which can arrange a variety of tours and experiences for you — anything from kayaking to helicopter flights. We do recommend using this to organize some additional activities during your stay.

If you time your stay right and are at the hotel during a full moon, you may have the opportunity to go on one of the hotel's moonlight walks; once again, feel free to discuss this with your specialist.

Accessibility

Do chat through any accessibility requirements with your specialist. The hotel in general is very accommodating of those with any specific accessibility requirements, and provides additional facilities such as wheelchairs for your stay.
