Located in deep forest and bordering the Mastigouche Wildlife Reserve, Hôtel Sacacomie overlooks a lake whose shores extend for more than 40 km (25 miles).
The log-constructed hotel blends harmoniously with the surrounding scenery. There are 109 comfortable rooms and suites overlooking either the forest or the lake, all featuring exposed wooden timbers. There’s a particularly cozy lobby area with large log fires and comfy sofas. The hotel has a restaurant, spa and a sandy beach, and it makes a good base for exploring the local area through hiking, trout fishing, horse riding, bear and beaver observation tours, and floatplane flights over the unspoilt wilderness. In the winter, you can take part in tobogganing, snowmobiling and dog-sledding.
Staff are very hospitable, and offer lots of advice on how to spend your time exploring the hotel’s surrounds.
Rooms can be small, and (due to the forest location) you’re likely to encounter some bugs while staying here. However, the surrounding landscape is pristine: overall this makes a great base for exploring Canada’s backcountry.

Rooms
There’s a hushed forest feel to the corridors that lead you to the property’s 109 rooms and suites. Some rooms overlook forest and can be slightly dark; others have lake views and are brighter and airier. The standard double forest room has two double beds, a balcony, a large bathroom and a sofa, while standard double lake rooms have double beds. The junior suite with a lake view has a sitting area, bath, fireplace and balcony. The rooms have quite dated decor throughout, but are well-equipped with amenities such as bathrobes, coffee and tea facilities, and Wi-Fi.
Location
The hotel’s location in the midst of the thickly forested Laurentian Mountains gives it a true hideaway feel. However, it’s only a 15-minute drive from the nearest town which has shops and restaurants.
Food and drink
The hotel’s restaurant (including an outdoor terrace in the summer) overlooks Lake Sacacomie and serves hearty and traditional regional dishes. Breakfast is served from 7am to 10am, lunch from 12pm to 2pm, and dinner from 6pm to 10pm (9pm in winter). A bistro menu offering lighter meals and snacks is available in the bar from 2pm to 5pm.
Facilities and activities
The hotel has a spa with saunas and hot tubs, a private beach and an outdoor pool. It’s possible to hire canoes, pedal boats and kayaks. The hotel can also arrange activities such as horse riding, bear and beaver watching, and scenic floatplane flights, while over 65 km (40 miles) of hiking trails wend their way through the forests around the hotel.
