Westin Harbour Castle, Toronto

Westin Harbour Castle

Toronto, Canada

This hotel, comprising two 38-story twin towers, enjoys a striking waterfront location overlooking Lake Ontario. It’s conveniently located near attractions such as the CN Tower as well as the wharves — ideal for boat trips over to Toronto Islands.

Step inside the spacious, marble lobby, and it exudes an urban, Millennial coolness which belies its rather functional-looking, prosaic concrete exterior. Rooms are slickly furnished and generously-spaced, and facilities include an airy indoor pool with an outdoor courtyard and tennis courts. Its crowning glory might just be its 360-degree restaurant, Toula, located on the top floor and boasting some of the best lake views in the city.

OUR OPINION:

A stylish waterfront hotel with good facilities and a sophisticated yet leisurely feel to it. Thanks to its optimal lakefront location, we think you’d be hard-pressed to find rooms with better views.

Rooms

The hotel has several room categories. The standard is a Traditional Guest Room, with suites in the form of Deluxe Corner Guest rooms, Lakeview Guest Rooms and Terrace Guest rooms. The two latter options can accommodate four people. All are equipped with tea and coffee-making facilities, fridges (not minibars), and a bath and shower. They are also sleekly monochrome and modern in their decor. Traditional Guest Rooms have city views, while the suites overlook the lake and have leather sofas. Decorated in neutral grays, they feel urbanite and masculine. There’s a fee for in-room Wi-Fi, although access is free in the hotel’s lobby.

Location

The property enjoys a great harborfront location, and its exterior (the lake-facing side) links up with a leafy boardwalk that runs along the lakeshore. It’s a straightforward 10-15-minute walk from Union Station, while the Entertainment District is around a half-hour walk away. It’s especially convenient for the ferry wharves, providing easy access to Toronto Island.

Food and drink

Buffet and à la carte breakfasts are served in The Mizzen, a casual dining restaurant in the main lobby. The Chartroom Bar and Lounge (where a DJ plays on Thursday afternoons) is also located in the main lobby and offers casual bites and a lengthy drinks menu. Italian restaurant Toula on the 38th (top) floor offers fine dining and far reaching views over the city and lake.

Families

Deluxe Corner Guest Rooms can be made into connecting rooms, ideal for families requiring more space. There are soft-padded areas near the pool for young children to play in and the hotel also offers a babysitting service.

Facilities and activities

The hotel has an indoor pool and hot tub which sit under a roof of skylights, giving the space a light, airy feel. The pool complex leads directly onto a sun terrace and outdoor tennis courts. Yoga and fitness classes are available (for an extra fee) at the gym. More innovatively, the hotel’s concierge lead running tours of downtown Toronto.

Accessibility

The main hotel can be accessed via a large ramp, although staff also use it.
