Zhangjiajie (Pronounced 'Jang-Jar-Jeer') lies in the northern part of Hunan Province. The area is a by-word for scenery, much of it part of the designated Forest National Park — the first in China.

Zhangjiajie scenic area, ZhangjiajieA visit here is recommended for hikers and those looking to get away from 'Big City China'. The city of Zhangjiajie, though you've likely never heard of it, is nevertheless a significant town in Hunan with a population of more than one million and a booming tourist industry to go with it.

The main scenic area is to the northeast and therefore clear of the city, near Wulingyuan. This is still a small, but rapidly developing town ideally located for exploring all that this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Park has to offer.
