Culinary Tour of Shanghai
Visit Zhonghua market in Shanghai and wander down some of the famous side streets sampling regional delicacies with a guide, who will be able to give you all sorts of recommendations.
Shanghai has very few Buddhist temples, so the Jade Buddha Temple is well known and well used. Over 15,000 Chinese Buddhists descend on the temple during the February Lunar New Year. Built in the early twenties, the Temple houses a two meter high, jewel-encrusted Buddha in seated position. No photography is allowed in the temple and shoes should be left at the entrance.
Wealthy Ming Dynasty officials founded the Yuyuan Garden in the 16th century. They spent 18 years creating and nurturing the gardens only to have them destroyed during the Opium War. The gardens have now been restored and attract hordes of tourists, most of whom are Chinese.
The bazaar area is also worth visiting as there are many snack bars and restaurants, famed for their savory delights. The Yuyuan Garden and Bazaar are located at the south-eastern end of the old city, its bustling maze of narrow lanes lined with traditional houses.
