El Peñol Tour
El Peñol Tour
This great day trip from Medellín takes you out into the countryside of Antioquia and to the giant monolith rock of El Peñol (literally, "The stone").
Today you will visit the Plazuela San Ignacio and some excellent museums, including the Museo de Antioquia. This is Colombia's second oldest museum, with a fine collection of works from Pre-Columbian to modern art collections. On the top level, of three, you will find the works of Fernando Botero. A Paisa himself, another being Presidente Uribe, Botero has donated 92 of his works to the museum.
Outside in the plaza area opposite the museum and the Art Deco Palacio de Cultura, you will find a number of his oversized sculptures that have made him famous throughout the world. If you take a walk past the Parque Berrio Metro station you will find another Botero Sculpture, La Gorda, the fat woman, in front of the Banco Republica.
