Kura Design Villas

Costa Rica

Kura Design Villas is a tiny boutique, adults-only, hotel with just eight detached villas, all beautifully designed with ocean views from their private balcony or porch.

The hotel has a small infinity pool with sweeping views over Punta Uvita, as well as a spa, restaurant and open air bar.

OUR OPINION:

A truly luxurious addition to Costa Rica's boutique hotel selection. Due to its secluded location — up a dirt track, a good 30-minute drive from the main road — this is perfect for anyone looking to escape from it all for a couple of days.

Rooms

The eight luxurious suites at Kura are designed with minimalism and comfort in mind. The decor is modern and elegant but emphasises the beauty of nature, incorporating local wood into the interior design and using floor-to-ceiling glass panes with views over the Costa Rican jungle.

Infinity suites have a king-sized bed, expansive terrace with two hammocks, double rainfall shower, plush cotton robes and organic toiletries. All suites accommodate two adults only.

There are two Master suites that are larger than the Infinity suites and sit higher on the hill for increased privacy and unique ocean views. The suites have expansive interiors and Kura-style plunge pools on their private terraces, for the ultimate luxury.

Location

Kura is located right on the hillside in the Marino Ballena National Park, on Costa Rica’s southern coast. The resort is nestled in the lush tropical forest, with views over the Pacific Ocean and the town of Uvita. There is a 15-minute drive to the main road and the largest town of Manuel Antonio is an hour’s drive away. Guests are recommended to fly into San José airport, which is a three and a half hour drive. A private driver, small flight into Quepos or helicopter transfer can be arranged.

Food and drink

With sustainability and luxury at the heart of the Kura focus, the dining experience offers guests the chance to sample some of the freshest cuisine, cooked using local ingredients, freshly caught seafood and local grass-fed meat from farmers right by the hotel. There is an onsite garden where vegetables and herbs are grown. The menus change depending on season and availability. Catch of the day is always popular and dishes are steeped in heritage with native tastes and recipes being the highlight of the menu. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are all readily available.

Facilities and activities

The situation of the hotel means that it is perfect for a mixture of relaxation and adventure. A magnificent infinity pool sits at the heart of the resort affording panoramic views and an afternoon of serenity. There is a luxurious onsite spa for a truly natural relaxation experience. The treatment rooms have huge glass windows to showcase dramatic views over the jungle and ocean.

Adventurous people will enjoy a hike to Nauyaca Waterfall through the tropical jungle, while watching out for curious tropical species high in the treetops like toucans, monkeys and sloths. The area is a wildlife enthusiast's paradise, with humpback whales seasonally spotted off the coast of the Uvita Whale’s Tail sandbar.

The stunning 35 km (22 miles) of sandy pacific beaches are easily accessible to guests, with the hotel offering a complimentary beach shuttle, ice, water, towels, beach chairs and even a picnic. There is also the opportunity for guests to stand-up paddleboard out at the Whale’s Tail and then snorkel with vibrant tropical species that live in the sheltered bay.

Environmental and social responsibility

With the design focussing on a fusion between architecture and biology, sustainability is at the heart of Kura to create the perfect tropical minimalism. The resort is a member of the Cayuga collection of sustainable lodges and hotels. This accolade represents the environmental awareness that has gone into the design, build and running of Kura Design Villas.
