Sasan Gir is unique in being the last remaining home of the Asiatic lion.

The Sanctuary

In 1980 this sanctuary was set up to protect the lion and its habitat, and since its initiation the number of lion have increased from under 200 to an estimated 674 (in 2020).

It is, however, controversial — in order for there to be a sanctuary land was required, and consequently local herders lost cattle grazing land. Additionally due to declining areas of forestation around villages, villagers are forced to forage for fuel in the park, so reducing the lions' habitat once more.

Weather

The best time to visit the park is December to April, when it is coolest. From mid June to mid October it is closed for the monsoon, though needless to say dates may shift a little depending on the weather patterns!
