Eremo della Giubiliana

Eremo della Giubiliana

Ragusa, Modica & Noto, Italy

Located in the countryside, around a 15-minute drive from Ragusa and Modica, the medieval stronghold of Eremo della Giubiliana has enjoyed a rich and varied history. In the gardens you'll find the ruins of an ancient necropolis, while the cloistered courtyards, a former Benedictine monastery, once housed an order of the Knights of Malta.

The property has been beautifully transformed into a hotel filled with antiques from tapestries to suits of armor. Outside, a charming central courtyard leads to a shady walled garden area complete with an inviting swimming pool. The guest rooms have been converted from the friars' cells. The rooms are simple but comfortably furnished in traditional Sicilian style.

The property also offers a range of cooking courses, wine tastings and spa treatments.

OUR OPINION:

Eremo della Giubiliana is a fascinating base from which to explore Sicily’s Baroque south.

Rooms

Most of the rooms at the Eremo della Giubiliana have been converted from the friars’ former cells. In keeping with the historic nature of the property, many rooms contain a number of antique items and details such as table coverings depicting the red flag with a cross of the Knights of Malta. A handful of rooms look out over the surrounding gardens and countryside, while others have views of the charming internal courtyards.

Location

Just 15 minutes' drive from Modica and Ragusa, the Eremo della Giubiliana is nestled within picturesque grounds in the heart of the Sicilian countryside. It's in an excellent location for exploring more of Sicily's Baroque south and makes an ideal stopover between Agrigento and Syracuse.

Food and drink

The Eremo della Giubiliana takes its food very seriously, and most of the produce on the menu comes from the estate. Breakfast is served in the vaulted dining room and is a typical Sicilian buffet spread. A particular highlight is the ricotta cheese. During the day, a light lunch is also on offer, but it's the evening meal, containing many local signature dishes and fresh seasonal produce, that is the real treat.

Facilities and activities

Inside the walled garden there's a pleasant shady swimming pool and a small spa and massage area. Twice a week, the hotel's chefs demonstrate ricotta making for guests. On-site cooking courses and wine tastings can also be arranged. Additionally, the hotel offers a range of scheduled tours through the surrounding countryside and local towns.
